Description:

Based on cinema and audiovisual media Drac Màgic designs a wide range of schemes and programmes dealing with media literacy, the representation of women in the media, the presence of women as filmmakers, and also conducts debates based on film screenings to approach different social issues. Drac Màgic is in charge of creating, developing and implementing these projects.
Drac Màgic was founded in 1970 and is actively involved in studying and divulgating cinema and other audiovisual works and using them in educational, social and cultural activities.
One of our preferential areas of expertise is the representation of women in the media and their presence in filmmaking and critics, creating and also promoting innovative projects addressing audiovisual media, education and women.

Alongside establishing platforms of coordination, we foster room for critical analysis, fight for recognition, and create activities to raise awareness.
Drac Màgic stands out for its team of experts and for taking part in innovative projects, always devising networks of collaboration with other agents. Drac Màgic also fosters and continues to endorse associations of cinema festivals, etc.

FEATURED PROJECTS
Mostra Internacional de Films de Dones de Barcelona
The International Women's Film Festival of Barcelona, running every year since 1993, aims to promote cinema made by women, to increase the visibility of women in audiovisual culture and screen films by women filmakers from all over the world, thus proving the significance of women's contribution to the development of audiovisual creation. After two decades of history, the International Women's Film Festival of Barcelona has become a stable cultural event and a platform for alternative screening increasingly committed to the debate on creative processes.
The International Women's Film Festival of Barcelona cofounded and is part of Trama (Coordinator of Festivals of Cinema, Video and Multimedia Works by Women) in Spain and CI&VICoordinator of Cinema and Video Festivals in Catalonia.
Moreover, La Mostra collaborates on a regular basis with other women's cinema festivals in Spain and other countries, such as the Festival International de Films de Femmes de Créteil (Paris).

Construir mirades. Education in media literacy
Construir mirades is a programme of activities aimed at improving the knowledge on cinema and audiovisual culture among primary and secondary schools throughout Catalonia since 40 years ago, and in Aragon and Valencia for the last years.
Construir mirades is a set of teaching schemes designed for each education stage in order to improve learning and training on media literacy in the school curriculum. Our main objective is to provide knowledge and tools to develop a critical approach to the ideas and values conveyed and represented by images.
This scheme consists of film screenings at the cinema and audiovisual workshops in class:

  • In cinema screenings films become a means to understand what films express and convey and which devices they use to do this. One of the educators in our team conducts these sessions at the cinema and makes a presentation and a closing speech after answering the students' opinions and questions about the film.

  • In audiovisual workshops the classroom becomes a place for thinking and reflecting on images and even creating new ones.

Observatory of Women's Representation in the Media
The Observatory is a public body of citizen participation that wants to go beyond the response and defense of consumers regarding their complaints against companies and people responsible for communicative contents which are vexatory and sexist. The Observatory is an organisation that provides tools for critical vision, critical analysis and social awareness in order to foster critical reflection on discriminatory and sexist contents in the media.
It practices and makes confrontation visible in the media from a gender perspective, as well as promoting public debate on discriminatory practice in the media.

The One-Minute Video
A space of one's own
is an initiative that was put forward in 1997 by Drac Màgic – Women's International Film Festival of Barcelona and now is organised by TRAMA (Coordinator of Festivals of Cinema, Video and Multimedia Works by Women) throughout Spain. Since 2002 the Festival Internacional de Films de Femmes de Créteil (Paris) collaborates in this project, and since 2008 several Arab and Spanish-American countries, such as Jordania, Egypt, Syria, El Salvador, Costa Rica and Bolivia, among others, also take part in it through the organisation Entre Cineastas.

Cortos en femenino
This is a program of short films directed by women in Spain. The Project was born in 2002 and it has an anual call from TRAMA (Coordinadora de Muestras y festivales de cine, vídeo y multimedia realizado por mujeres). The selected shorts are shown in the main festivals who works within this platform.
