Trevor Reznik works in a factory and has long suffered a serious problem with insomnia, a complaint he manages to hide but which provokes ever more disturbing hallucinations. As a result, his job at the factory becomes increasingly untenable, and things get even more complicated when he's involved in a work accident in which a workmate loses an arm. In a bid to prove his innocence and save his job, Trevor accuses another worker, Ivan, of causing the accident. But the story takes an unexpected turn when his co-workers at the factory claim that this Ivan doesn't really exist. From then on, aspects of Trevor's terrible past start to sourface.
